The South Surrey White Rock softball community came together on Sunday, April 26, to celebrate two remarkable young women whose leadership, character, and commitment to the game reflect the enduring legacy of Deonne Jett Cochran — a beloved athlete whose spirit continues to shape the association she once called home.
The Deonne Jett Cochran Memorial Scholarship, one of the association’s most meaningful annual honours, was established in memory of Deonne, a vibrant and passionate player who rose through the ranks from house ball to the Thunder rep program. Known for her heart, grit, and joy, Deonne lifted everyone around her, both on and off the field. The scholarship created in her name recognizes athletes who embody those same qualities: integrity, teamwork, community service, and academic determination.
This year’s ceremony carried special significance with the presence of Deonne’s mother, Julie, who has remained a cherished member of the softball family. Her participation in presenting the award underscored the deep emotional connection the community continues to hold for Deonne and her legacy.
Two athletes were selected for the 2026 scholarship — each demonstrating exceptional leadership, academic excellence, and a profound commitment to their teammates and community.
A standout student and global thinker, Maya has distinguished herself as a decorated Model United Nations delegate, a debate leader, and a dedicated academic who approaches her studies with the same intensity she brings to the diamond. On the field, she leads by example — calling plays, lifting teammates, and fostering positivity regardless of the score. Her long-held dream of pursuing medicine reflects her drive, compassion, and belief in the power of teamwork. Maya’s blend of intellectual curiosity, athletic leadership, and community-minded spirit made her an exemplary choice for this award.
Aaliyah’s accomplishments span academics, athletics, and community service. An accelerated scholar graduating early with exceptional achievement, she has already been accepted into a Bachelor of Science program to pursue physics. Beyond the classroom, she is a long-time umpire, a mentor to younger athletes, and a calm, composed presence on the mound. Her volunteer work — from tutoring peers to inspiring elementary students in STEM — highlights her commitment to giving back. Whether officiating high-level championships or guiding teammates through tough innings, Aaliyah leads with accountability, communication, and unwavering poise.
Both Maya and Aaliyah embody the qualities that defined Deonne: passion, leadership, community, and a deep love for the game. Their achievements, character, and dedication reflect the very best of the South Surrey-White Rock softball community.
As Julie helped present the awards in her daughter’s honour, the moment served as a powerful reminder of how one athlete’s spirit can continue to inspire generations.
